Visiting Olhão

The markets are landmarks in the city: they consist of two buildings, built in 1915, one which is devoted to the fish, freshly caught locally, and the other to local vegetables and fruit. These markets were recently renovated, now being the best in the country for both hygiene and quality.

The walkway in the "Rua do Comércio", was the first pedestrianised street in the country, opened in 1933, as well as the esplanades by the sea, near the markets, tempting you to a leisurely stroll along their length.

Take a trip by boat to the nearby islands, which are always a delight and a surprise, too. There are regular sailings from Olhão to the islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol.

The Church of "Nossa Senhora do Rosário"

The church of “Our Lady of the Rosary” was the second stone building raised in Olhão, built with the help of the local fishermen (1698-1715). If you look in the bell tower you will find an inscription saying “At the expense of the fisherfolk we made this new church at a time when everyone lived in wooden huts”.

There is a majestic baroque front with a shield of angels in the centre. The spacious interior lies under a single ceiling vault. The large chapel has a panel inserted in the altar and a carved golden triumphal arch (18th century), whilst the ceiling is decorated with a fresco and the image of “Our Lady of the Rosary” (17th century). The transepts also have carved golden panels – amongst the images are included that of the crucified Christ and one of the apostle saints (18th century). The church treasury holds vestments and jewels. You can find paintings from the 17th and 18th century in the store room.

Located at the rear of the church is the "Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos" or “Chapel of Our Lady of the Sorrows”, which is dedicated to those who make their living from the sea.

Don´t forget to make the trip up the church tower so that Olhão can reveal to you the secret of its skyline, which is well-known for the "açoteias" or roof terraces.
